Sam L. Sebesta

Dr. Sam L. Sebesta is a recently retired Professor from the College of Education at the University of Washington in Seattle. He received his M.A. from Northwestern University and his Ed.D. from Stanford University. Although his dissertation focused on phonics, Dr. Sebesta's more recent research has been in the areas of children's reading preferences and reader response.
Before earning his doctorate, Dr. Sebesta taught at the elementary school level, Grades 1–8. He is an active member of the International Reading Association and has served as literature reviewer for The Reading Teacher, co-chair of the Children's Choices project, and regional leader for the Teacher's Choices project. He received the 1986–1987 Arbuthnot Award for Outstanding Teacher of Children's and Young Adults' Literature.
Dr. Sebesta conducts many workshops and speaks throughout the United States, Europe, Saudi Arabia, Canada, and Australia. He coauthored Literature for Thursday's Child and edited such books as Ivory, Apes, and Peacocks and Inspiring Literacy.
