Dr. Donald J. Leu began his teaching career in the Peace Corps, teaching English as a Second Language in the Marshall Islands of Micronesia. He also taught fourth and fifth grades and worked as a reading specialist in California. Dr. Leu received a master's degree in Reading and Human Development from Harvard University and a Ph.D. in Language and Literacy from the University of California, Berkeley. A former chair of the Department of Reading and Language Arts at Syracuse University, he currently holds an endowed chair at the University of Connecticut. A frequent speaker at conferences, he has given invited talks in North America, South America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. His publications include Effective Literacy Instruction K–8, 5th Edition, and Teaching with the Internet: New Literacies for New Times, 4th Edition, as well as chapters in the Handbook of Reading Research, the Handbook of Literacy and Technology, and Theoretical Models and Processes of Reading.
Dr. Leu is President of the National Reading Conference and is a Fellow of the National Conference on Research in Language and Literacy. He serves on the editorial review boards for Reading Research Quarterly and the Journal of Literacy Research. His research has appeared in Reading Research Quarterly, Journal of Educational Psychology, Journal of Literacy Research, The Reading Teacher, Language Arts, Written Communication, and Reading Online.
